Joel Mendelson is the Principal of M/AP, an architecture and project development firm located in the San Francisco Bay Area.   He is licensed to practice Architecture in California, and his career architectural design focus has been on residential and mixed use architecture, site planning, resort, institutional, and commercial work.

Joel recently completed a position working as an owner’s representative and development manager for Ellis Partners at Google on the recent LEED Platinum YouTube headquarters expansion in San Bruno, opened in November 2023.

Joel honed his residential design practice in Sonoma, Napa and St. Helena - working on houses and estates as a Senior Architect with Bevan & Associates, as well as in the East Bay, working as a sole practitioner with M/AP.

Between 2009 and 2014, Joel practiced at Hart Howerton and with SB Architects, where he served as Senior Design Architect for a competition-winning mixed-use project along the Mediterranean in North Beirut, for Dubai-based Majid Al-Futaim.

Prior to moving to the Bay Area, Joel practiced in New York City as a Senior Associate with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, where he provided design and team leadership on a wide range of award-winning mixed use, master plan, and residential project efforts at home and abroad.

Joel holds a Masters in Architecture from University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from Oberlin College.  In October 2012, Joel served as the team leader for a four-day AIA community design exercise held for Seabrook Island, SC.

Joel is an avid open water swimmer and cyclist, and a proud member of the Dolphin Club, located on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.
