Joel Mendelson is the Principal of M/AP.  He is licensed to practice Architecture in California, and his career focus has been on residential architecture - single and multi-family, as well as urban planning, complex mixed-use buildings, resort, institutional, and restaurant work.

For the past several years and currently, Joel has been honing his residential design practice in beautiful Sonoma, Napa and St. Helena - working on large-scale renovation and ground-up houses as a Senior Architect with George Bevan,  Bevan & Associates.

Prior to moving to the Bay Area, Joel practiced as a Senior Associate with Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City from 1998 to 2008, where he provided design and team leadership on a wide range of project efforts. In San Francisco and New York, between 2009 and 2014, Joel practiced at Hart Howerton and with SB Architects, where he served as the Senior Design Architect for a major mixed-use project along the Mediterranean in North Beirut, currently under construction.

Joel holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelors Degree from Oberlin College.  In October 2012, Joel served as the team leader for a four-day AIA community design exercise held for Seabrook Island, SC.

When he’s not designing houses, he’s either cooking, running, or loosening things up with WHITEWASH, a mix of new ideas in sculpture, furniture and drawing.
